President Salva Kiir Mayardit is in Egypt for a two-day visit upon the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.

South Sudan Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin told reporters at the Juba International Airport that President El Sisi had invited President Kiir during the Malabo African Union (AU) Head of States meeting as well as during United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York.

“The purpose of the visit is to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Republic of South Sudan. Among the issues that we will discuss will be on the River Nile aswell as economic co-operation”, said Dr Marial.

He affirmed President Kiir’s commitment to strengthening ties with Egypt, saying the Cairo administration hascontinued to support the rebuilding of South Sudan.

“As you know Egypt is supporting a number of development projects in South Sudan. For instance, in the area of Education, the Egyptian government has awarded scholarships to the Republic of South Sudan through the Alexandria University branch in Tonj. In health, Egypt has also been giving humanitarian assistance in terms of drugs, medicines and humanitarian assistance to the displaced as well as at the Egyptian Clinic in Juba and Bor”, he said.

The minister listed power and hydro-electricity as some of the other areas that have been receiving support from the Egyptian government.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said the president will be accompanied by the relevant ministries of Education, Health, Agriculture, Hydro Power and Electricity, Foreign Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs.

Dr Marial added that the two governments will also sign a number of agreements.
