Referring to Wipro chairman Azim Premji’s remarks regarding the “complete absence of decision-making”, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said there was a need to correct the noted industrialist’s impression as he was a “very esteemed member of society”.
Soon after the cabinet meeting, she cited the government’s “big initiatives” in the recent past. In the process, she sought to shrug off the setback of the massive anti-corruption campaign and a series of graft allegations against the UPA ministers. The spat between Pranab Mukherjee and P. Chidambaram further dented the government’s already-sullied image.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also talking about focusing on good governance, which is a clear sign that the events over the past few months had derailed the administration. At a recent conference of governors, Singh spoke of meeting the challenges of sustaining the high growth rate and singled out infrastructure development as the focus of the 12th plan.
The two previous cabinet meetings have seen some major policy initiatives to help the economy. The government announced a new manufacturing policy aimed at jiggling the industrial sector out of slumber. The cabinet on Tuesday cleared a booster for micro and small enterprises, a critical sector with substantial employment prospect.
The government is conscious of the criticism it is facing on account of lethargic decision making and attempts are now being made to correct this perception. Soni said the issue of lack of “corporate governance or governance in general” had come up earlier also and the government was sensitive to the people’s voice.
