Passengers on a Flight LS177 – Spain-bound Jet2 plane, this morning were forced to evacuate using inflatable emergency chutes after the captain declared an emergency after smoke was detected in the cockpit just before the take-off.
The pilot of the Boeing 737 plane made an emergency stop and slammed the brakes harder at around 7.40am after fumes were detected. Twenty individuals have reported to be suffered from minor injuries after the evacuation.
Strathclyde Police has told five people were taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and a further 15 were treated at the scene.
No one is understood to have been seriously injured. All 189 passengers on board used the inflatable chutes to exit the plane, which had been scheduled to fly to Alicante.
One passenger onboard from North Lanarkshire, Natalie Crawford has told: ‘Just as the plane was about to lift off, there was a strong smell of smoke and the cabin instantly filled up.’
Firefighters attended the emergency evacuation of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft. At the time of the evacuation, a Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: ‘We are currently dealing with an ongoing incident at Glasgow Airport involving a 737 aircraft following reports of smoke within the cabin.
‘Emergency services are in attendance and the passengers have been evacuated as a precaution.’
After the incident, as many as 20 scheduled departures including international flights have been delayed. 12 arrivals were diverted to Edinburgh whilst a flight to Dublin has been cancelled.
