The Director of Information, Radio and TV Broadcasting in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State (NBGS) Bakheit Garang Akech Deng made the appeal as Aweil has never had its own local radio station since Northern Bahr el Ghazal state was created in 1994.
“The state has long aerial transmitter which has 500 watts, donated by the national government since 2006 in our store but the state has not been able to afford remaining equipment. We were assigned 96 FM for Aweil Radio but things were not easy since then,” Garang lamented.
“I am appealing to the humanitarian organizations and other sons and daughters of Mading Aweil in Diaspora to hear my call and answer positively in providing the needed equipment so that we are able to erect Aweil 96 FM,” he said.
Aweil TV used to have its own programmes from 7:00-9:00 pm and also relay programmes of South Sudan television from 9:00-11pm but its equipment got spoilt in August 2012.
“With a sudden breakage, our studio developed some technical problem in August which was not easy to repair locally and hence had to be transported abroad,” said Garang.
“Our recorders and editing machines were all spoiled leading to the heavy loss of some data which were later recovered,” he explained.
The defunct Aweil TV station according to Garang has well trained presenters who always presented news in Arabic, English, Dinka and Luo languages but lack equipment.
Nevertheless, Northern Bahr el Ghazal has two privately owned radios; the Inter-news sponsored Nhomlaau 88 FM and Werbei 89 FM, a church sponsored radio station in Aweil East County.
