A suspect has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of a young shooting victim who was a former player of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s football team. 18-years-old Sheldon Ashton Scrubb, of Milton, was arrested on Wednesday in slaying of Kwado (Kojo) Mensah and charged with second-degree murder, reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault. He is now scheduled to appear in court today at 10 a.m.

20-years-old Mr. Mensah was shot to death on April 25 at the Grace Hartman Housing Co-op in Scarborough’s Malvern neighbourhood. Soon after that, Mr. Ford promised the mother of Mr. Mensah, Juliana Mensah, that those responsible for the death of her son would be brought to justice. Ms. Mensah confirmed that the mayor visited her home in Etobicoke and offered words of comfort and prayer. She further added that Mr. Ford was like a father figure to her son, and coached Mr. Mensah on the Don Bosco Eagles football team.

Ms. Mensah further commented that her son was a good boy and that he came home every night. She did not have to worry about him. Answering to an interview question at her home on Monday night, Ms. Mensah stated that “whatever you say, he will never come back.” She stated that “I just lost him and I will never see him again. He broke my heart.” Police has reason to believe that Mr. Mensah’s slaying was connected to another shooting that took place on the same night in Scarborough.
