The Bukit Gelugor by-election this 25th of May will be contested by the candidates from at two major parties – PAS and Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM)

Members from both the parties, PCM’s Datuk Huan Cheng Guan and PAS’ Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar, announced their intentions this Friday to contest the seat which has been vacant since the death of its member of the parliament, Karpal Singh who died in a car accident on the 17th of April. The Election Commission has fixed the coming 12th May as the nomination day for the candidates and has decided upon 25th May as the polling day. In the 2013 general election, Karpal Singh had defeated the BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam with a majority of 42,706 votes. Huan, 53, who is PCM vice-president, announced his candidature at a press conference here today while Mohamed Nabi Bux, 63, a Pas member in Gombak, told reporters as such after submitting his candidacy papers to the EC office here.

The Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, when commenting on Mohamed Nabi Bux’s intentions, said anyone could contest as this was a democratic country. Lim said the Pas member was not contesting on a party ticket but as an independent. “This is a democratic country and anyone can contest regardless of which party….any member of any party can contest as an independent, not on the party (ticket),” he said.
