This Saturday a 12-storey building collapsed in Chennai’s city suburb. The building was under construction and it has caused the death of one person whereas it is feared that fifty people are still trapped under the debris. Heavy rain caused the building to collapse before it could be completed.
The Fire and Rescue Services Joint Director S Vijayasekar earlier informed that according to the eyewitnesses there were about 50 construction workers at the site at the time of the collapse. The rescue officials have added that five persons have been rescued with injuries and have been sent to the nearby private hospital. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said that on her directives, NDRF teams had rushed from neighboring Arakkonam even as multi-agency relief operations involving were on in full swing. In a statement, she said that she ordered officials to initiate legal proceedings against those responsible for the incident. Jayalalithaa also added that the injured should be provided with the best medical treatment and that special light arrangements are made to make sure there’s no hindrance in rescuing people thru the night.
“I have ordered police officials to take legal action against those responsible for the incident,” she said. More than 100 workers are carrying out the rescue mission. The building firm Prime Sristi, said that the thunder caused the building to collapse. “Usually, once the construction gets over we install the equipment to prevent the building from thunder strike. It was nearing completion,” Balaguru, Director, Prime Sristi, said.
