It has been over nine days since the deadly attack in Dhaka took more than 20 lives but one of the hostages detained by authorities for further questioning, 22-year-old University of Toronto student Tahmid Hasib Khan, is reportedly out of contact with his family since. Khan, who is a permanent resident of Canada, was meeting two female friends for dinner at the Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka’s diplomatic quarter on July 1, when heavily armed attackers stormed the eatery. The Islamic State militant group later claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mr. Khan’s brother explained that his mother sent food for him on Eid last Wednesday as the family believed he was in police custody at the time. The family claims to have had spoken to him on the phone as well. However, the family living in Dhaka confirmed that it did not receive any word from him since then and they’re seriously concerned for his well-being. Mr. Khan’s brother who lives in Toronto, Talha Khan, mentioned during an interview that “it’s a really difficult time for us all,” because “sometimes we hear good news, sometimes we hear bad news. We’re between hope and fear right now.”
According to the spokesperson of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mr. Khan was released with other detained hostages on July 3 and no one rescued from the café was in police custody now. However, Mr. Khan’s brother insisted that he has not returned home and his current whereabouts are unknown to the family.
