Stockwell Day, current President of the Treasury Board and former leader of the Canadian Alliance, has announced the end to his time in politics. In a statement on his own web site, he writes, "Now, after 14 years in provincial government and almost eleven years at the federal level it is time to move on. I hereby announce that I will not be seeking re-election at the end of this mandate."
Day was born in Barrie, Ontario in 1950. HIs father was involved in politics and like father, like son, Stockwell followed suit.
In 1986, he was elected representative of Red Deer North in the Alberta government as a Progressive Conservative, a position he held until 2000.
In 2000, he won out over Preston Manning for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance party. He ran in a by-election in the riding of Okanagan in order to take a seat in Parliament. With a promise to "shake up Parliament", he held his first official news conference on a beach on Okanagan Lake showing up on a jet-ski wearing a wetsuit.
In order to take a seat in Parliament, Day ran in a by-election in the riding of Okanagan—Coquihalla in British Columbia, vacated by Reform/CA MP Jim Hart. Day won the by-election on September 11, 2000, arriving at his first news conference on a Jet Ski wearing a wetsuit.
His conservative background has on numerous occasions plagued him as past comments about homosexuality and abortion have been fodder for journalists. Despite admissions of being accepting, Day made headlines when he acknowledged he would use the Notwithstanding clause to block a Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage. Along with that, Day believed and believes in Young Earth Creationism. Media nicknamed his campaign bus, "Prayer Force One".
In 2002, the leadership was again contested and Day lost to Stephen Harper. In December 2003, the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservative Party merged to become the Conservative Party of Canada.
Stockwell Day’s history seems to be littered with well-publicised gaffs. He was quoted as saying that jobs are following south [from Canada to the U.S.] "like the Niagara River". The Niagara River flows north. In August 2010, he attempts to justify the government investment of $9 billion in new prisons in Canada because of the alarming rise in unreported crimes. Mr. Day has not publicly said what he will do next.
Newspapers are reporting on widespread speculation about the government falling on the next federal budget, due to be released on March 22. If so, Canadians will go to the polls in May, 2011.
