This Friday, NDP federal council is scheduled to convene in Ottawa. The conference is expected to decide upon the preliminary system to administer the impending leadership race. The party geniuses will stretch out all the particulars, together with what the budget for balloting.
According to one of the NDP officials, it’s possible that the control caucus will take place in the spring next year, anywhere in central Canada, given the party has had latest meetings in Vancouver and Halifax and will announce a convention in Quebec City next week.
On the other hand, there has been perplexity about whether the NDP agrees for union votes to hold more significance in a control race. Back in 2003, “affiliated members” of the party were honored with a full 25 per cent of total votes cast, but the rules stated that wasn’t in the new charter, which was launched in 2009.
According to Turmel, the party now sticks to one member, one vote policy.
He said: “In 2006, the convention changed the NDP constitution. If the NDP want to change that formula once again, they’ll have to go back to the next convention to do so. The constitution is clear: it’s one member, one vote.”
