TMC MPs, leaders and workers held protests today against the arrest of their MP, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, on Tuesday. Demonstrations were held in Kolkata, New Delhi and Bhubaneshwar as alleged workers of West Bengal’s ruling party attacked BJP offices, hurling bombs and setting them on fire.
In a bitter reaction to the arrest of the TMC leader in the Lok Sabha and a close Mamata Banerjee aide, Bandyopadhyay, party workers protested outside the offices of CBI in Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar, where the MP was taken for production in a court after his arrest. Meanwhile, a BJP delegation met with the Governor of West Bengal, KN Tripathi, and petitioned him for imposition of President’s rule in the state due to deteriorating law and order situation.
Meanwhile, TMC MPs also attempted to protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi but they were detained mid-way. Detained at Tughlak Road police station, TMC MP Sugata Roy explained that “we are protesting against Bandyopadhyay’s arrest, demanding Modi’s resignation and inquiry into his taking money from Birla and Sahara groups. We are also demanding Babul Supriyo (Union Minister) for his involvement in the Rose Valley scam case.” Roy pointed out that “we were marching peacefully towards the Prime Minister’s residence, but the police detained us mid-way and manhandled few of our MPs.” According to Roy, 36 TMC MPs took part in the protest march and the detained MPs were allowed to leave in the evening.
