Canadian Soccer AssociationCanada’s women’s U-17 team will face Germany in a Women’s U-17 International Match this coming Saturday 4 February 2012. The match will be part of Canada’s 10-day training camp in Fort Lauderdale, FL, which runs 31 January to 9 February.

Coach Bryan Rosenfeld is preparing his team for the coming 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship in Guatemala this May. The eight-team championship will qualify three teams to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later this year. The U-17 tournaments feature players born 1995 or later.

“We are getting closer to our CONCACAF qualifiers and we are confident that our squad is working in the right direction,” said Rosenfeld, who called in 22 players for the February camp. “We have a good core group of players, but we will still have at least one more camp to look at some players.”

This marks coach Rosenfeld’s fourth project with the 1995-born players since August 2011. Over that time, 35 different players have been invited into the national U-17 camps. Of the 22 players called into this camp, two players are making their national youth camp debut: goalkeeper Marnie Merritt and midfielder Aman Shergill.

“The Germany international match will be a good test for our team,” said Rosenfeld. “At the same time, we must keep things in perspective as it is a friendly and not an official competition match.”

Also as part of the 10-day camp in Florida, Canada is expected to face Florida International University in an exhibition match.

The 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship runs 2-13 May in Ciudad Guatemala, Guatemala. All the matches at the tournament will be played at Estadio Cementos Progreso. Canada is the reigning CONCACAF Under-17 champions, having won the last biennial tournament in 2010.
