It seems like the federal government is concerned about the increased likelihood of another Air Canada strike expected next week. Allegedly, the union is threatening to go on strike if it is not given back the pay and concessions it relinquished to facilitate the airline’s streamline in 2003 and 2004.
On Wednesday, Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said: “The government is concerned that a strike is possible and is taking this situation very seriously.”
The union represents approximately 8600 mechanics, baggage handlers and cargo agents at Air Canada. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 2323 declared on its website: “We are the largest unionized workforce at Air Canada, without us, it’s all grounded.”
Labour Minister Lisa Raitt has insisted both parties to continue negotiating and reach another comprehensive agreement as soon as possible. She said she is personally observing the problem at hand; however, “the best solution is the one that the parties reach themselves. A work stoppage is not in the best interests of Canadian public or Canadian businesses.”
On the other hand, the democrats seem to urge the federal government to maintain a distance from the ongoing negotiations.
NDP transport critic Yvon Godin said: “Forcing them to come up with a deal at the negotiating table, I don’t think is half-bad. But to legislate a collective agreement or legislate something in the collective agreement … is bad. It has to be the two parties that get the contract.”
