The Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) Team Up Foundation and RONA, in collaboration with the City of Brampton, unveiled new plans to refurbish James F. McCurry Victoria Park Arena on Wednesday. Construction will begin in the spring, marking the 32nd project undertaken by MLSE and the Team Up Foundation and the tenth project of this nature, in partnership with RONA.
To recognize the project, the Toronto Marlies held an open practice at the arena in Brampton on Thursday morning. Joining them were hundreds of kids from the Brampton community who had the chance to watch the aspiring Maple Leafs stars during a full-team community practice. At the end of their practice, the Minor Atom Brampton Bombers were invited on ice with the Marlies to go through skills and drills.
Marlies players and Head Coach Dallas Eakins were joined by RONA’s Director of Market Development, Greater Toronto Area, Doug Newstead, Brampton City Councilor, Ward 9 and 10, Vicky Dhillon and Executive Director of the MLSE Team Up Foundation, Michael Bartlett.
The Team Up Foundation with the support of MLSE’s Corporate Partner RONA will be investing $25,000 in significant upgrades and improvements to the James F. McCurry Victoria Park Arena including the refurbishment of a women’s change room. This summer, employees from MLSE and RONA will contribute more than 300 volunteer hours to make these changes happen.
“The Team Up Foundation is excited to make improvements to this facility for the Brampton community,” said Michael Bartlett of the Team Up Foundation. “We support the inclusion of females in sport and demonstrate a commitment to offering equivalent facilities to both genders; as such we are happy to refurbish the change room so the girls will have a place of their own.”
“We are thankful to the Toronto Marlies for their generous support of women’s hockey in our community,” says Councilor Vicky Dhillon, Chair of Community Services for the City of Brampton. “The refurbished change rooms at Victoria Park arena will make a big difference for the female players who use the arena.”
The Team Up Foundation strives to improve the lives of youth by building facilities, giving to sustainable programs and empowering youth through sports and recreation. The refurbishment at James F. McCurry Victoria Park Arena is one of eight projects that will be completed this year.
The Marlies next home game is Saturday, March 17 when they host the Milwaukee Admirals AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators at 3:00pm at Ricoh Coliseum.
