A new session shall commence with sitting number one as Parliament fully resumes its usual sittings, one of the Assembly’s protocol staff who asked to remain anonymous informed Gurtong that the parliamentarians who were on a 3 month recess were expected to resume work this week.
However, the MPs were recalled from their recess to the State capital Torit in order to witness the assent of the State constitution and swearing in of the State Governor respectively on 20th January 2012. Constitutionally, they were also sworn in the following day.
“I would like to welcome you back to the Assembly, I hope you not only enjoyed the recess but also acquainted yourselves with problems facing your constituencies. The specialized committees of the House must come up with laws, motions, urgent and important matters and reports from constituencies and Counties,” the speaker said.
The Speaker attributed the past achievements like passing of bills, resolutions and MPs’ hard work despite various challenges.
Speaking in reference to over extension of sittings witnessed during the last sessions, the Speaker promised to abide by the Conduct of Business and regretted that the Assembly had in one way or another debased the law by lengthening sittings to 61 which according to him would have been limited to between 40 and 45 sessions. He however defended the extensions to have been in compliance to State Conduct of Business which provides a clause for such an extension.
Some officials and citizens in Torit, the State capital of Eastern Equatoria have informed Gurtong that the State Governor, Hon. Louis Lobong Lojore has similarly asked the House to help in vetting the proposed list of his new cabinet this week.
The officials further disclosed that the Governor publicly informed the State leaders especially his present Caretaker Cabinet, County Commissioners and others that competent people deserve to be appointed or reappointed into his new Government.
Speaking during the ceremonial resumption of the Assembly, Hon. Lobong assured the public that the appointment of his executive members shall continue to be rational and clarified that no one should assume that they shall always remain as bona fide appointees.
