"West Side Story"

American Cinematheque presents as screening of the classic 1961 film West Side Story at the Aero Theatre. With a score by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story re-imagines the story of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet in the world of 1950s New York street gangs. Natalie Wood stars as the lovely and idealistic Maria and Richard Beymer as her earnest love interest, Tony, surrounded by feuding, switchblade-carrying gangs led by Russ Tamblyn and George Chakiris. Bernstein’s soaring, instantly memorable score, with lyrics by a young Sondheim, still stands more than 50 years later as one of the finest ever written. The film won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Producer and poster designer Mike Kaplan will introduce the program by showing images from Gotta Dance: The Art of the Dance Film Poster, a major exhibit of his vintage movie poster collection, on view May 17 – September 23 at the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica.
