After winning two matches over the weekend to qualify for the main draw, Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) took on world no. 29  Julia Goerges of Germany in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome on Monday, a WTA Premier 5 event.

The match marked the third meeting between Wozniak and Goerges with the German winning their first two encounters. Goerges imposed her will in the first set, breaking serve three times.

Wozniak fought back in the second set, saving a match point before winning the tiebreak decisively to force a third set. Down 1-3, Wozniak came back again to level the set, but in the end ultimately fell 1-6, 7-6(1) et 3-6 after just over 135 minutes of play. Goerges will take on Marion Bartoli of France in the second round.

Wozniak will complete her preparations for Roland-Garros next week at the WTA event in Strasbourg.
