Expo Center (Long Beach, CA)
This thought-provoking opera is based on an essay by neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks, and features music by composer Michael Nyman (best known for his score to the film The Piano). The opera is an investigation into the life of Dr P who has acute “mental blindness” due to damage of the visual parts of the brain, a condition known as visual agnosia. He can see colors, lines, boundaries, simple shapes, patterns and movement, but is unable to recognize everyday objects. A talented performer, Dr P’s exceptional musical ability allows him to return sense to the world by putting his actions into music. Nyman’s compositions for the opera display the power of music to both organize and integrate a shattered world into sense, giving meaning back to what was once an abstraction.
