The NHL and NHLPA have planned to continue their negotiation sessions tomorrow as a another day of mediation commences at 10:30 am ET. Duration of the previous session, conducted yesterday, was almost 13 hours, during which deputy director of the federal mediation & conciliation service, Scot Beckenbaugh, travelled several times between the league offices and the player hotel on Friday.

The NHL lockout of last season came across 17 straight days of mediation between February and March of 2011. The talks failed, but later soon after involving mediators, a settlement was reached in July. Beckenbaugh will have to remain extremely cautious while performing his duties as a mediator as his duty obligates him to keep a secret of what the NHL is thinking to the NHLPA and vice versa. Hence, being a mediator he is helping both sides by keeping them in dialogue, though he shall not disclose the strategy or thought process of one party to the other. Considering that Beckenbaugh is still involved in the negations, history indicates that he believes there is a window of opportunity to reach a solution and close the deal after all.

NHLPA has taken vote on another “Disclaimer of Interest” mandate by all players’ at 6 pm ET yesterday. While on the other hand, Don Fehr, refrained from exercising his rights of dissolving the players union by 11:59 pm ET Wednesday night,  that was the deadline given by NHLPA. Hence now it is truly believed that after taking the second vote, NHLPA is all set up for dissolution.
