Egyptian Theatre (Hollywood, CA)
American Cinematheque has assembled the Holy Trinity of roller disco cult classics — Xanadu, Roller Boogie and Skatetown, U.S.A. — for one boogie-licious triple feature at the Egyptian Theatre. Xanadu stars Olivia Newton-John as a roller-skating muse, The Warriors bad boy Michael Beck in some really short shorts and screen legend Gene Kelly shaking his groove thang in his final film appearance. Over the years, this piece of cinematic cheese has fermented into a cult classic, thanks to the catchy songs of Electric Light Orchestra and the luminous presence of songbird Olivia Newton-John. The Exorcist‘s Linda Blair stars in Roller Boogie, a disco-fueled roller skating romp in which a Venice local tries to stop a nefarious developer from turning a local roller rink into a shopping mall. And Skatetown, U.S.A. rounds out the night with a light-as-a-feather skating competition plot and a crowd-pleasing cast featuring Scott Baio, Flip Wilson, Brady Bunch beauty Maureen McCormick and Patrick Swayze in his first big role.
