The national standard for quality control dumped and burned over 5, 000 white flour and 1, 000 cowpeas 25 miles along Juba-Yei road.
Since South Sudan is still at the verge of establishing facilities to certify the quality of consumable goods, the Ministry of Commerce and Investment found out heavy tons of expired consumer goods with less quality ingredients.
“Water entered the white flour and the cow peas while on transit from Kenya and when they reached my store, I stopped the goods from reaching the market. I did not care about the loss to me but for the reputation of my company I had to report to the government,” said the Executive Director for Edwards Fields Company, Samuel Laki.
It is believed that expired commodities find their ways into the country every year without being detected by the authorities. However, in January this year, the government announced seriousness to embark on ways and means of resolving the matter by establishing a standard laboratory for testing of food and drugs to avoid the health risks involved.
The Director General for Standard, Gar Yang Bior said the directorate is using East African Standards to find fake goods which are said to have come from foreign countries.
“Any commodity which is recommended by the national standard is allowed for consumption by the people of South Sudan. We are going to send our investigators into the market to find out more fake commodities,” said Yang.
The national standard for quality control is tasked to regulate and enforces prescribed standards of quality, safety and efficacy together with inspecting personnel, premises and practices. The Undersecretary for the Ministry, Simon Niang Aney said they will have to take a collective decision on the company.
“We are going to sit as a Ministry together with the company to take further decision,” Niang said.
Last year the Ministry of Commerce and Investment set up a frame work for quality control in South Sudan.
The national regulatory board was tasked to ensure that only authorized persons are involved in importing, exporting manufacturing, stocking, selling, distributing or otherwise dealing in regulated products.
