British ex- police officers including a former prison officer and another public official have admitted leaking secret information to the journalists at the Sun tabloid.

Both pleaded guilty in connection to the probe over misconduct in public office on Friday and charged with committing misconduct in a public office when during their separate appearance at the Old Bailey.

Policeman Alan Tierney, 40, had admitted selling secret details about arrests including the case involving Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and the mother of former England football captain John Terry for a fee of £1,750 in 2009. While, the Prison officer Richard Trunkfield, 31; had confessed about providing the paper illegally with confidential information regarding a “high-profile” prisoner in 2010 for £3,350.

Both officials were arrested as part of the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Elveden inquiry into allegations that in order to acquire secret and confidential information for their newspapers, journalists were intentionally bribing the police and other officials.

They are due to be sentenced later in March. They were granted bail with he instructions that all their sentencing options will remain open.

The investigation is linked to the scandal of reporters listening to the private voice mail messages left for celebrities, crime victims, politicians and others.

The misconduct has led to several arrests, large payouts to victims and the closure of Britain’s best-selling tabloid – The Sun, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. media empire.
