The inaugural Contact Dance International Film Festival will bring 14 independent dance films from 7 countries to Toronto, Canada, June 12 and 13, 2013. The festival, produced by REAson detre dance productions, will highlight films featuring momentum-based dance, created by some of the top choreographers in the field of Contact Dance Improvisation. A unique opportunity for both film and dance lovers to experience the joy, chaos and intimacy of human connection through dance, from the concrete balconies of Tokyo to a home studio in Sweden to a beach in India. Negative Space > Positive Space (Rachel Brown, USA, 2012) – Home studio jam in Brooklyn Sense-8 (Katrina McPherson and Simon Fildes, USA, 2001) – Explore perception in this seminal dance film that merges contact dance techniques with camera and editing techniques. Between the Lines (Blake Nellis, USA, 2009) – Filmed in Brussels, a dance duet travels to various urban locations sometimes blending in and sometimes emerging as an agent of change. Usual (Yasukichi Suzuki, Japan, World Premiere) – Human connection occurs on concrete balconies and studios in the urban setting of Tokyo, Japan. In Touch (Johan Planefeldt, Germany, 2012) – Filmed in Goa, India, developmental movement patterns & contact improvisation are poetically explored. The effect is like looking into humanity’s eyes. THURSDAY FILMS June 13, 2013 @ 7:30 pm The Revue Cinema, 400 Roncesvalles Avenue Five Ways In (Mike Poltorak, UK, 2013) – A glimpse of the Freiberg Contact Improvisation Festival. This is the “rock star” of all jams. It sells out a few minutes after registration goes on line. Greyscale (Karen Kaeja and Allen Kaeja, Canada, Premiere) – A woman slipping into a collision of grey, of ash and lead, immediate and in between. Moments of Practice (Irene Sposetti, Sweden, 2011) – Intimate moments of practice in a home studio in Sweden. Stumble (Allen Kaeja, Canada, Premiere) – A subtle stumble on route sends three individuals into a collision course of the unexpected. Groundswell (Suzanne Liska, Kathleen Rea, Lee Walder, Canada, Premiere) Edges of anger and sensuality saturate the dance. Hasta Donde (Sharon Freedman, Spain, 2011) – Highly physical contact dance based choreography is a gem of intensity and nuances that will leave you speechless. Sketchbook (Jeremy Finch, USA, 2011) – A personal look at a man’s decision to pursue his passion for dance in all its joys and frustrations.
