Russia continues to attack KYIV, but what does the Putin deliver?

Again the streets in Kyiv were full of smoke this morning due to the many fires after Russian drone and rocket attacks. According to the Ukrainian army, Russia attacked Ukraine with a record number of 550 drones and rockets. At least 23 people were injured, no dead are reported.

President Zensky spoke of a “heavy, sleepless night”. According to him, “Russia shows again that it is not going to put an end to the war and terror.

The Ukrainian authorities warned the population this morning for Smog as a result of the attacks. People were advised to stay inside and keep windows and doors closed.

The damage is considerable. On images from the AP news agency you can see that an apartment building has been badly damaged. The 23-year-old Alja is sitting with her dog this morning in front of that flat. “The balcony and the kitchen are blown away. We were in a hiding place, staying at home would have been our death,” she tells AP.

Impact and shock golf

According to fellow townsman Olena, the air strikes went on all night. She says to the Ukrainian public broadcaster: “Around 2.20 am we heard the sound of an approaching drone. A second later the impact was and we felt a shock wave. Two rooms from our apartment were damaged.”

Another resident of Kyiv, the 45-year-old Roeslan, stands by burned-out cars: “It was a big explosion. I ran down and saw that everything was on fire. People tried to extinguish the fire, but it was in vain.”

Russia maintains that it only attacks military goals. In a statement, the army says that with long -distance sweaps, precision attacks have been carried out on drone factories, a military airport and an oil refinery.

Russia strategy

The air strikes on cities such as Kyiv, far from the front, do not help President Putin to conquer territory in the Donetsk, Loehansk and Zaporizja regions. That does not mean that the air strikes are random, says Tim Sweijs, defense expert and researcher at the center of The Hague for strategic studies.

“Violence in a war is a political instrument. The Russians want to show that they can and want to continue the fight and continue to increase the pressure. With this type of attack, they try to create the conditions under which a leader is willing to give up or go to the negotiating table.”

According to Sweijs there can be several reasons to hoist the white flag. In this way the military, economic and human costs of the war can become too great. The support of the war of Ukrainian citizens, opposition and allies can also disappear.

Negotiate or hardening the battle

Swweijs speaks of “strategic bombing” where Russia hopes that Ukraine, the US and Europe will be tired of war and Ukraine is forced to sit at the negotiating table. But the attacks can also turn against Russia. “It can also lead to hardening of the struggle and willingness of the US and Europe to give more military support.”

President Trump came to the conclusion after a telephone conversation with Putin last night that Putin “is not going to stop”. He called it one disappointing conversation. In a submitted piece on the Ukrainian news site New Voice, a Ukrainian soldier and political strategist writes that Putin has Trump in the face with the attacks last night spit.

Zelensky asks more anti -aircraft

Today a telephone conversation between Trump and Zelensky is planned. Zelensky has been asking for more weapons, especially anti -aircraft weather.

Wednesday it was announced that Ukraine is correct for the time being Less ammunition and rockets From the US, including anti-aircraft missiles for patriot systems. It is precisely that system that is needed to shoot ballistic rockets from the air.
