Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar might be asked to resign over the increasing criticism on his involvement in the coal gate scam. Supreme Court has derided the Federal Government over its attempts to interfere in the CBI reports, which has increased the pressure on Congress-led UPA government to consider the matter in great depth.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and President Pranab Mukherjee met on Thursday to discuss the outcomes of the coal scam and chalked out the future steps. The PM also met Attorney General GE Vahanvati and Law Minister Ashwani Kumar to discuss the matter.
Earlier, Vahanvati informed the Supreme Court that he met CBI officials responsible for drafting the probe report on coal blocks scam on the orders of Kumar. However, both have candidly denied trying to tamper the CBI probe report, while CBI director Ranjit Sinha maintains that the A-G, the Law Minister, and officials of the PMO and Coal Ministry had read the report before it was submitted to the apex court.
Rumor has it that Congress president Sonia Gandhi is also convinced that Ashwani Kumar should be laid off in order to protect the government’s reputation. The apex court has directed the CBI to keep all the details of its investigations at a safe distance from lawmakers and government officials.
“How could you give/show the draft report meant for the court to those whose conduct was under the scanner… It was not sharing but alteration… Somebody telling you do this. Somebody telling you do that. And you agree. You must actually try to make yourself a solid rock, but you are like sand,” Justice Lodha said.
