Amid speculations of an upcoming major remake of the federal cabinet at hands of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, several sources have reported that the Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has decided to announce his retirement from politics on Friday. Toews has always been appreciated for his decidedly right-wing views on criminal justice issues, along with his scornful attacks on political opponents.

Rumors have been swirling for a long time that Toews is looking for a federal judicial appointment, however despite the news of his expected retirement, it is still unclear whether the Manitoba MP will quit politics to rejoin someplace else or straightforwardly announce departure from public life and abstinence from re-election in 2015. In either case, Toews is anticipated to soon become another name on a long list of Conservative ministers who are expected to be demoted or dropped from cabinet altogether. The upcoming overhaul is already interpreted to be one of the biggest mid-term cabinet shuffles in Harper’s seven years in office.

In the past, Harper had only taken steps like changing a position in the federal cabinet at serious issues and specific problems. However, this time around is seems like the issue is more concentrated on perception rather than performance, as it is felt that the government needs new faces to refresh the otherwise appearing increasingly tired government. Defence Minister Peter MacKay is a relative newlywed and brand new dad who may well want to trade in his ministerial life of endless work and travel for more time with his family.
