Maharashtra police fears that the reopening of dance bars will result in increased crime rate. Supreme Court recently upheld the bar on dance bars previously imposed by a Bombay High Court. After seeing seven years of darkness, the dance bar industry in India is on a spur of celebrations while police continues to fear for public safety.

According to the state police authorities, the business of dance bars may now nourish but its implications can be more serious than the decision makers might have considered. Police force is of the opinion that if dance bars grow like a mushroom, they will build the capacity to overshadow and threaten the law enforcement bodies.

“This (restarting of dance bars) might result in revival of activities of the underworld and anti-social elements. There have been several instances in the past which suggest that the accused have held meetings in the bars to decide their targets,” a crime branch official reported.

Police also believes that dance bars encourage the public to develop perilous interest in night life, such can increase the number of drunken driving incidents, late night fights on the streets or even robberies.

“Rules and regulations for operations of dance bars should be very stringent. Illegal or semi-nude activities should not be allowed. No doubt, there would be an increased pressure on the police due to the restart of such bars,” former Maharashtra DGP P S Pasricha said.
