Canadian retailers are completely prepared for this year’s Black Friday and expect it to be bigger than ever, as they try their best to accommodate local customers who might instead travel to attain big deals in the U.S. Bayshore Mall, Rideau Centre and St. Laurent have announced to open up at 7 a.m., most of which have even listed Nov. 29 as a “Public Holiday.” Meanwhile, Place d’Orléans disclosed that it will open 90 minutes early at 8 a.m., while Best Buy at 6 a.m. Friday and Target at 7 a.m.
Almost all Ottawa malls and stores are striving to keep local consumers from travelling south of the border to the United Sates and enjoy extremely attractive deals being offered in New York. General Manager at the Rideau Centre, Cindy VanBuskirk, has stated that “this is definitely an opportunity for us, and the real goal is to keep Canadian dollars in Canada. We think we can compete with deals in the U.S., and have to come up with compelling reasons to keep people here.” The Rideau Centre is slated to officially take part in Black Friday for the first time this year.
The mall’s owner, Cadillac Fairview, conducted a test program last year in the Toronto area which resulted in overwhelming response. Consequently, VanBuskirk revealed that the mall is not only giving the first 100 shoppers a $10 gift card, but also free gift-wrapping services, customer coat check and random give away of Senators tickets.
