Protesters managed to infiltrate the security of Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, when he was scheduled to begin a question-and-answer session at the Vancouver Board of Trade on Monday. A couple of protesters managed to get within inches of the prime minister, who sat at the small stage, and stood behind him while holding a sign that read “Climate Justice Now,” while the other mentioned “The Conservatives take climate change seriously” with a line crossing out the phrase.

Moments later, the security detail of the Prime Minister succeeded in discreetly removing both protesters from the stage without causing any notable or disruptive incident as Harper and board president, Iain Black, remained adamant in their chairs on stage. Later on, the group that organized the protest mentioned in a press release that the incident took place to denounce the government’s environmental record. The statement mentioned that “the latter (protest sign) was a condemnation of the Harper Government’s failing climate policies and a reference to the recent revelation that Conservative minister of the Environment removed a comment about taking climate change seriously from a speech, despite being recommended by Environment Canada.”

The release referred to a previous report from last month, which unraveled that Environment Minister, Leona Aglukkaq, willfully “set aside” a proposal from staffers that asked her to publicly acknowledge scientific evidence has proven that humans are “mostly responsible for climate change.” The release was signed by Brigette DePape, a Senate page who was fired two years ago for disrupting the government’s throne speech by holding up a “Stop Harper” sign as Gov.-Gen. David Johnston read.
