While many Canadians are returning to work after the holidays, the temperature is still less than zero and troublesome winter conditions prevail all across the country. Residents in Newfoundland are still engulfed in power outages that resulted soon after a strong blizzard, which rocked the province and prompted closure of schools and businesses.
Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed the death of at least one resident due to carbon monoxide poisoning as many residents attempt to use generators in order to stay warm during the power outages. Moreover, a winter storm has once again swamped parts of Ontario overnight, dropping heavy snow and freezing rain and making the morning commute almost impossible for many. Even though Canadians from all over the country have already had enough of the bitterly cold winter, Environment Canada predicts that there is still more to come.
The agency has issued several weather warnings across central and eastern Canada for Monday night, cautioning about more freezing rain, snow squalls and Arctic temperatures. Apart from that, Environment Canada issued extreme wind chill warning for parts of the Prairies and Ontario, as temperature steeps as low as -40 degrees with the wind chill by Monday night. Meanwhile, the agency has also speculated areas in Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba to experience extreme temperatures overnight, which are anticipated to slide below -36 degrees with winds of up to 15 kilometres per hour. Moreover, parts of Ontario are expected to see scattered flurries and snow squalls overnight too.
