Office of the Alberta Premier, Alison Redford, recently revealed that she has cancelled a 48-hour secret trip to Afghanistan that was due to take place on the weekend, in light of the recent deadly Taliban attack on a Kabul restaurant often occupied by foreigners. Apart from the security concerns that now affect the decision after Friday attack at the Taverna du Liban restaurant, which killed 21 people including two Canadian accountants, Martin Glazer and Peter McSheffrey, Ms. Redford mentioned that it would be insensitive to make a political visit to the city at such a difficult moment.
Premier’s spokesperson, Neala Barton, mentioned in a statement that “her decision was that it was not the right time,” as she added that “people are focused on other things.” It is revealed that Ms. Redford planned to visit Canadian troops deployed in the Afghan capital on the weekend, which are only two months away of their withdrawal from the war-torn country. In addition to that, her scheduled also included a visit to a children’s health institute in which the University of Alberta is involved.
It was added that Ms. Redford will soon be speaking to reporters by phone on Monday from Switzerland, where she is participating in a panel discussion and bilateral meetings at the World Economic Forum. Moreover, Barton stated that human and women’s rights in developing countries, like Afghanistan, has always been prioritized by Ms. Redford. It was reminded that as lawyer, Ms. Redford worked as an adviser on constitutional and legal reform issues in South Africa in the 1990s.
