Polansky, Raonic and Nestor lead the way for Canada
The official draw for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone, Group I, second round play-off tie between Canada and the Dominican Republic took place Thursday in Toronto. The tie will be contested on the outdoor Grandstand Court at Rexall Centre from September 17-19, 2010.
The Miele Canadian Davis Cup squad consisting of Frank Dancevic (Niagara Falls, Ontario), Daniel Nestor (Toronto), Peter Polansky (Thornhill, Ontario) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, Ontario) will battle the Dominican Republic in two singles matches on Friday, one doubles match on Saturday and two reverse singles matches on Sunday. Miele Canadian Davis Cup team captain Martin Laurendeau will be at the helm for this weekend’s tie.
Today’s draw produced the following weekend match-ups:
Event | Representing Canada | Representing Dominican Republic |
1st Singles Rubber, Friday, September 17, 11:00 a.m. | Peter Polansky | Jhonson Garcia |
2nd Singles Rubber, Friday, September 17 | Milos Raonic | Victor Estrella |
Doubles Rubber, Saturday, September 18, 2:00 p.m. | Frank Dancevic and Daniel Nestor | Luis Delgado and Jose Hernandez |
3rd Singles Rubber, Sunday, September 19, 11:00 a.m. | Peter Polansky | Victor Estrella |
4th Singles Rubber, Sunday, September 19 | Milos Raonic | Jhonson Garcia |
“I have three guys to choose from for singles and this team is probably the deepest and has the best singles players that we have had in a while,” said Laurendeau about his line-up choices. “Obviously the younger guys have played well lately so that is a factor in my decision but I know that Frank can jump in at any time and that is a great luxury.”
A win for Canada against Dominican Republic would secure their spot in the Americas Zone Group I for 2011. The losing nation will be placed in Americas Zone Group II for next season. Only 16 countries entered in Davis Cup competition qualify for the elite World Group.
