Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (Beverly Hills, CA)
Mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade — hailed as “one of America’s finest artists and singers” by The New York Times — stars in this haunting chamber opera of memory and murder, racism and recrimination, based on a play by Pulitzer Prize-winning Texas playwright Horton Foote. A Coffin in Egypt tells of 90-year-old grand dame Myrtle Bledsoe, a woman who has outlived her husband, her daughters and virtually everyone else in her town of Egypt, Texas. But in the last stage of her life, she can’t outlive the truth, and an intimate afternoon conversation triggers a searing examination of her past.
