Former pharmacist who once operated two hotels in the Downtown Eastside, George Wolsey, has failed to appear at a scheduled court appearance this morning due to an alleged emergency MRI for an unspecified neck and back problem. Wolsey is sought by the provincial court on a matter relating to more than $18,000 in damages he owes 10 of his former DTES tenants.

According to Wolsey’s lawyer, Daniel Barker, his client was undergoing an emergency MRI at Royal Columbian Hospital. He explained that Wolsey fell over the weekend and worsened a pre-existing medical condition. Prior to Barker’s appearance, an agent acting on behalf of Barker, presented the court with a doctor’s note from a walk-in clinic. Upon inquiry by reporters if the defense was using delay tactics, Barker explained “that is contrary to the facts, because he attended here I believe it was in October and then he actually attended here in March 31st.” He said “so that’s the answer as I see it to the assertion that Mr. Wolsey is somehow trying to avoid the hearing. Unfortunately, he has a medical condition and it was exacerbated recently and according to his doctor, he shouldn’t attend.”

Thereafter, the matter was adjourned until later this afternoon. The case relates to a court order issued last year for the 60-year-old Wolsey to pay $18,163.75 to 10 of his former tenants for alleged abuses and lack of standards they endured while living at Wonder and Palace Hotels.
