Vancouver police has announced to have charged two men in a 2009 Vancouver murder in which the victim was mistakenly gunned down instead of another gangster living in the same halfway house. 36-year-old Kevin James Jones and 33-year-old Colin Victor Stewart were arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Friday night for the killing of Rajinder Singh Soomel on Sept. 29, 2009.

According to Vancouver Police Insp. Laurence Rankin, the killers intended to target Independent Soldiers founder Randy Naicker, but got the wrong man. He alleged that “investigators with the VPD Homicide Unit determined that Raj Soomel fell victim to a gang-related shooting gone wrong.” In addition to that, Rankin alleged that “Mr. Soomel was not the intended victim and was in the wrong place at the wrong time when gunmen came looking for another target.”

Rankin alleged that Naicker was warned by police about the death threats against him. He elucidated that “VPD investigators did speak with and inform Mr. Naicker that his life could still be in danger. He would later be murdered on June 25, 2012, in Port Moody. That homicide remains under investigation by the Vancouver Police Department.” Rankin refrained from confirming whether Jones and Stewart are suspected of being hired by someone else or if the pair is suspected in Naicker’s murder. He said that “we believe it’s gang-related, but beyond that I am not about to say” because “I am not about to disclose that because the matter is still under investigation.”
