Lutheran Church of the Master (Los Angeles, CA)
Widely considered Mozart’s best and funniest work, The Marriage of Figaro is a grand comic opera full of mistaken identities and surprises. Independent Opera Company’s space opera adaptation sets the classic tale on a distant planet and tells the story of complicated love affairs in the style of a comic book. Considering the original setting was moved to a Spanish castle to appease French royalty, the treatment is not too farfetched. In the aftermath of his marriage to Rosina, the count’s palace becomes a tangled web of love and lust — the pageboy Cherubino courts the countess while the count pursues the maidservant Susanna, who is betrothed to the wily Figaro. As the count conspires to steal Susanna, Figaro, his fiancée and the countess maneuver to embarrass and expose the scheming count. The show is accompanied by projected English supertitles lettered like a graphic novel.
