Recently elected Toronto Mayor, John Tory, wants to sit beside his deputy mayor, Denzil Minnan-Wong, on the floor of council, but that seat been assigned to outspoken Ward 7 councillor, Giorgio Mammoliti. Councilor Mammoliti mentioned on Wednesday that he is hesitant to give it up, alleging that “him (Tory) and I are supposed to have a conversation today about seating arrangements.” He added that “that’s a million dollar seat. You can’t just give it away. I’ll tell you what if the mayor promises me no property tax increases for the next four years than I might give away my seat.”

Mammoliti has been sitting beside the last three Toronto mayors. He stressed that the seat has been given to him by taxpayers of the city and it is his to do with as he wishes. In his remarks, Mammoliti alleged that he could only trade the seat with an opportunity to personally hold Tory to account on spending at city hall, giving it some value. He said that “we will see what happens but that is the way I stand right now. It is my seat, the taxpayers gave it to me and I wore my deodorant today so I don’t smell.”

Mammoliti was not included in Tory’s executive committee and he claimed to have felt “singled out” on Tuesday due to his past support of Rob and Doug Ford. Upon inquiry about the situation during Wednesday’s council meeting, Minnan-Wong alleged that “if Coun. Mammoliti wants some to hold the mayor to account on keeping taxes down I am his guy.”
