Beloved for its warm and interactive stage-free musical experience, Le Salon de Musiques showcases chamber music in an intimate environment — the fifth floor of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Los Angeles Music Center. This May salon offers the chance to hear the work of two genius Russian composers — Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff — played by two masters: John Walz on cello, and Steven Vanhauwert on piano. Walz is the principal cellist with the Los Angeles Opera, and his dazzling musical virtuosity has found him performing all around the world as a soloist with more than 150 symphony orchestras. Vanhauwert, winner of the Grand Prize at the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, has had his “impressive clarity … and monster technique” hailed by the Los Angeles Times. In addition to beautiful renditions of timeless musical masterworks from Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky, UCLA musicologist Julius Reder Carlson will be present to give context to the works, and the performance will be followed by a Q&A with the musicians and a reception featuring champagne and a Patina-catered buffet.
