One expects an out and out situational soundtrack for Saala Khadoos. The film's theme pretty much gives an impression that the five songs put together by composer Santhosh Narayanan and lyricist Swanand Kirkire would be primarily aimed at adding on the narrative, instead of working as standalone numbers.
MUSIC
During last couple of years, Vishal Dadlani has been roped by many a composers for singing title songs of their films. It is no different at the beginning of this year either, what with Santhosh entrusting him to deliver the goods yet again for the title song 'Saala Khadoos'. He brings in the right energy and passion to the lyrics put together by Swanand who rightly describes the 'khadoos' attitude of the central protagonist, played by Madhavan. As a standalone number, it carries a good pace to it and has a good rhythmic feel to it.
From Madhavan, it is time to focus on the leading lady Ritika Singh who gets an entire song to her name in the form of 'Jhalli Patakha'. A foot tapping number which pretty much describes the carefree and 'bindaas' nature of the girl in question, this one has a South influence to it, right from its beats to the rhythm to the choice of instruments to the husky manner in which Sunidhi Chauhan sings it.
It is time for some love to blossom, what with Monali Thakur going all poetic with 'Dil Ye Ladaku'. With a strong Ilaiyaraaja influence to the overall styling and presentation, the song has an element of mischief to it and Monali only adds on to it further with her sweet vocals. Her pitching of the song is perfectly right for the young protagonist who has fallen in love and is experiencing varied emotions in her heart.
Vishal Dadlani returns to the setting with 'Jagaa Khunnas'which is about motivating the protagonist to go all fiery and ferocious in his approach when it comes to taking up challenges. An out and out situational number which could well find itself being played in the middle of the film's second half when the time of reckoning is announced, this one also has Vijaynarain joining Vishal behind the mike. An okay number.
The album concludes with 'Dhuaan Hai Dhuaan Zindagi'which is rendered by Kalyani Nair. Almost an unplugged affair, this one is a sad narrative about the girl risking losing everything in her life, post an unfortunate incident. Pretty sad in is treatment as well, thankfully it is just three minute long and hence hopefully won't bring down the pace of the film.
OVERALL
As expected, the music of Saala Khadoos stays strictly situational and doesn't have much to offer beyond the theatrical run of the film.
