Given the level of public and media interest surrounding the recent death of a six week old Nanaimo boy, the Nanaimo RCMP are providing a synopsis of their efforts to date.

Since the tragic death of this infant was reported to emergency services shortly before 6:00 am last Sunday morning, investigators with the Nanaimo RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Section, and First Nation’s Community Policing Section have been involved.

As with any unexplained death, police investigators are tasked with determining whether or not criminality is involved. Police work alongside medical experts within the BC Coroners Service in completing this task.
Our investigators remain focused on examining all facets of this young boy’s death, including the quality of care he received over his short life, his medical history, if any, and the circumstance under which his life ended.

Investigators have spent the last five days interviewing potential witnesses, gathering and analyzing physical evidence, and working cooperatively with the BC Coroner Service, in an attempt to answer the many questions that remain in this case. These efforts are ongoing, and will take time to complete.

“We must, in fairness to the boy’s family and the broader community, ensure that we release only those details which we have confirmed to be accurate”, states Cst. Gary O’Brien, spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP. “We remain committed to fairly examining all aspects of this case, to determine what led to this young boy’s death.”

The RCMP remains committed to providing additional details on our investigational findings, at the appropriate time, as we progress through this investigation.
