As the teachers of British Columbia make preparations for the upcoming strike, most of the public schools have decided to stay open throughout next week after persistent security assurances by the provincial government.

However, it seems like the government could not convince all the B.C. public schools to remain open. Provincial Education Minister George Abbott said principals, vice-principals and support staff will not be given off, yet he discouraged parents from sending their young ones to school.

He said: “It’s going to be a boring place, generally speaking. There will probably be a lot of sitting around and talking, so it won’t be an interesting or exciting place.”

Northern B.C. schools, Central Okanagan and Okanagan Skaha schools, Greater Victoria, Sooke, the Cowichan Valley and Nanaimo/Ladysmith schools, and Saanich schools will remain open. However, North Island and the Comox Valley schools will be closed to students.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert declared the strike on Thursday, after corroborating that the majority of teachers, who voted this week, favored a strike.

According to a new law introduced by the Labour Relations Board, all the strikes would be considered illegal until Aug. 31. However, the bill will roughly take two weeks to pass into law, which means the strike will only be legal until the legislation is passed.
