On Day 1 at the Oval, the South African team had a fiery start but the English icemen have successfully covered the flames with another cool partnership. England chose to bat first on a cloudy morning – and shower had delayed the start by 15 minutes and Strauss lasted barely a couple more, the second-wicket pair shut out South Africa's much-hyped attack for more than two sessions.
World No.1 fast bowler, Dale Steyn was off the pitch for treatment to an ankle injury during a much brighter afternoon, but still got through 21 overs to no avail by stumps. England's start of the day could not be worse when Strauss was lbw to Morne Morkel, via DRS. South Africa captain, Graeme Smith as well as Morkel, deserved credit for striking the first blow against his opposite number.
Alastair Cook's unbeaten 114 helped England dominate the opening day of the first Test as the vice-captain saw England reach 267-3 by the close, with Jonathan Trott (71) and Kevin Pietersen (42) also in the runs on a miserable day for the tourists. The 20th test century of Cook has taken him not only to level with his Essex mentor and England batting coach Graham Gooch but also with his team-mate Kevin Pietersen in his country's list of most prolific centurions.
Day one credit goes to Cook and England, but South Africa could struggle to be competitive unless they can get Steyn to fire soon.
