The Last Five Years from Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown (Parade, 13) comes to Hudson Avenue Theater. This one-act, two-person musical chronicles the marriage between an up-and-coming New York novelist and a struggling actress. Told entirely through exuberant and heartrending songs, it’s the story of the couple’s five-year relationship, from the first thrilling pangs of new love to their final, painful separation. However, there’s a twist: The man relives the relationship from beginning to end on stage, while the woman relates their story in reverse, from end to beginning. Their “times” correspond only once, signaled by a remarkable duet on their wedding day. The show premiered in Chicago in 2001 and was then produced off-Broadway in 2002. Since then it has had numerous productions both in the United States and internationally. Kristen Boule directs.
