The political future of Toronto’s Mayor Rob Ford now depends on the decision of three judges.Ford mentioned during the legal proceedings on Monday, that he will keep “fighting for the taxpayers” while he patiently waited for the ruling of his appeal against a judge’s decision, which ordered him to be suspended from office since he violated a municipal conflict of interest act by casting a vote during a council meetingof Feb. 2012.
The judgment was announced in November, when Ontario’s Judge Hackland declared that Ford has only few days after which he will have to vacate his offices because it has been established that he participated in a voting process which decided whether he has to repay $3,150 raised for his football charity or not. Later Ford was granted an appeal of stay on the ruling, which implies that it will not be put in action until his appeal was heard andjudgment was announced. The panel of justices hearing the appeal did not disclose a specific date to release their judgment.Instead, after listening the entire court proceeding and arguments presented from both Ford’s lawyer, Alan Lenczner, and Toronto resident Paul Magder’s lawyer, Clayton Ruby, the panel’s senior judge Justice Edward alleged to produce a “prompt decision.”
In case Ford wins the appeal, he will be allowed to remain in office and complete the rest of his term. Whereas in case it fails, he will be suspended from office and it will be up to City Hall to decide whether it wants a replacement or mayoral byelection.
