It has been confirmed that Chief of Attawapiskat First Nation, Theresa Spence, has finally made an affirmative decision of putting an end to her almost-six-week-long hunger strike after assurances successful negotiations with mediators. Mediators assured Members of the Assembly of First Nations and the Liberal and New Democrat caucuses will be supporting a list of commitments with aboriginal issues.

All the respective representatives of the AFN, the NDP caucus and the Liberal caucus are going to sign a declaration drafted to include specific commitments requested by Spence. The mediators were lead by Interim Liberal Leader, Bob Rae, who was present for the negations in Sarnia on Wednesday, and will be signing the 13-point declaration as well. The president of the Canadian Native Women’s Association, Michèle Audette, made an announcement declaring Chief Spence will soon be holding a press conference on Thursday morning in Ottawa at 11 a.m. ET. Chief Spence will also be accompanied by her companions who accompanied her in the hunger strike. One of those companions is an elder from Cross Lake Nation in Manitoba, Raymond Robinson, who will also be ending his hunger strike today. Robinson informed the media, that “I have never been in such an awe-inspiring movement … with all the nations of different races coming together to try to achieve a common goal, and I cannot thank them enough for all the generosity, all the support.”

Nishnawbe Aski Nation is hosting an “honouring ceremony” in respect of Spence and her fellow companions on Thursday afternoon, which Rae and the other representatives are expected to attend.
