The Vancouver Police Department has been inundated with publicity inquiry requests due to a YouTube video showing an officer scuffling with a cyclist, who ran over a red light. The administration of the department has immediately place the officer on leave pending further investigation.
The video, posted online on March 28, illustrates an undercover officer in an attempt to arrest the man in the city’s Yaletown neighborhood around 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday night, while another officer assists him in the arrest. The video shows that the officer holds the man’s arm behind his back and rather than placing handcuffs, he dictates the apparently calm suspect, Andi Shae Akhavan, to relax his arm. When Akhavan moves his arm, the officer punches him in the face. Upon inquiry of cyclist that ‘why did you punch me?!” the officer replied “because you were resisting… I was trying to put handcuffs on you and you pulled your hand away.” Mike Schwartz, Akhavan’s friend who was filming the incident, asked “what the hell was that?” after the punch was thrown, and warns “that’s going on TV right there.”
The Vancouver Police Department issued an official statement declaring that the suspected officer has reported the incident to his supervisor, and the Office of the Police Complains Commissioner will be notified. Sgt. Randy Fincham mentioned that the “allegations of police misconduct are taken very seriously.” It also added that “the officer is currently on weekly leave.” Even though Police has also described Akhavan’s behaviour as “confrontational” before his arrest, he was released on a promise to appear pending charge approval.
