Deadly Boat Accident off Greek Coast

Description

On Wednesday, at least 59 migrants lost their lives in a boat accident off the coast of Peloponnese. The boat, carrying an unknown number of passengers, capsized 53 miles off the Greek coast. Greek emergency services rescued more than 100 survivors.

The Rescue Operation

The Hellenic Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard were instrumental in the rescue operation. Although the coast guard had previously offered help, it was turned down. Moments after the offer was declined, the boat capsized. As a result, emergency services had to swing into action. The passengers were mostly heading to Italy from Libya’s Tobruk town.

Survivors Rescued

While the operation was ongoing off the coast of Peloponnese, another rescue operation was carried out off the coast of Crete. A sailboat filled with migrants had encountered difficulties, and the crew were in distress. Thankfully, the rescue operation was effective, and dozens of people were rescued.

Search for Missing Passengers

Search operations are ongoing, and it is unclear how many people were on board the capsized boat. Local authorities are optimistic about finding more survivors amidst the search and rescue operations.
