10-year-old girl who barely survived a tragic house fire in Pelican Narrows, Hope Ballantyne, is still in critical condition at Winnipeg hospital with her mother by her side. Hope Ballantyne was rescued from the burning bungalow on Saturday morning by her mother, Joanne Ballantyne, however her two visiting cousins died in the blaze. The bodies of 10-year-old Solomon Ballantyne and 9-year-old Josiah Ballantyne were later discovered from the ruins of the house.
Unfortunately, the fire truck community was broken at the time while no volunteer firefighters were available to attend the fire. Hope’s cousin, Rhonda Sewap, explained that she is now recovering in the hospital and her treatment is expected to last three months or more. Sewap remembered that Josiah and Solomon were “pretty strong little boys” who competed to see who could do the most pushups, and recalled that the two were always together. She mentioned that “when one was gone out of town the other one would cry for him.”
Sewap explained that the boys’ parents, Eleanor and David Ballantyne, are surrounded by family and friends who are constantly looking after them since the tragedy. She revealed that the couple have six other children from kindergarten age to about 20. Ballantyne’s neighbor, Larry Custer, was walking his dog in the morning when he saw smoke and flames rising from the roof. He went inside and found Joanne Ballantyne wrapping the girl in a jacket or blanket, along with her 11-year-old son with her in the smoke-filled living room.
