Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has trapped himself in yet another controversy, as this time his views contradict with the organizers of one of the city’s leading business dinners over his invitation. While the hosts’ claim that the mayor was not invited, his Twitter feed says otherwise.
According to representatives of The Toronto Region Board of Trade, the mayor arrived despite not being invited on Monday evening for its annual dinner, i.e. an important event on Bay Street’s social calendar, which hosts almost 1,300 guests at a vast ballroom of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. According to the organizers, Mr. Ford was not on the list of guests while one board official even called the situation “awkward” in the extreme. Consequently, the mayor was ushered to an empty seat at a table in a back corner. Chief Executive of Board of Trade, Carol Wilding, reaffirmed that “we did not invite the mayor.” She highlighted that the board previously issued a strong statement amid the crack-smoking scandal last fall, asking the mayor to take a leave from the office for the sake of the city. She alleged that “I think it would be disingenuous to extend an invitation when under current circumstances our statement holds.”
Meanwhile, the board did invite Deputy Mayor, Norm Kelly, who unconventionally transferred majority of the mayor’s powers when city council took steps to sideline the mayor after the scandal erupted. Mr. Kelly was seated at a prominent table and had his photograph in the dinner brochure.
