This Sunday evening brought a tragedy for India as 24 students taking pictures near the Beas river were gulped down by a huge wave of water as it suddenly rose several feet above their heads. The victims were part of a group of 48 students studying 2nd year Electronics and Instrumentation at a private engineering college in Hyderabad.
The incident took place on Sunday evening and five bodies were recovered on Monday from river Beas near Thalot on Manali-Kiratpur Highway, 40 kms from Mandi. The students were caught unaware by the sudden discharge of water in the river from the reservoir of 126 MW Larji project. The search for the nineteen students still missing is still in process. The 70-member rescue teams comprising of two battalions of SSB is being assisted by the local police in search of the students. “The high volume of water and shortage of boats is causing some problem but we have list of missing persons and hope to recover the bodies. Our jawans are moving in boats and strict vigil is being maintained along the banks of Beas by NDRF teams. Twelve divers are also assisting in rescue operations,” said the SSB officials.
Suharsa, one of the students said, “It was around 5.30-6pm on the third day of our tour and we all wanted to stop for a break. We were all sitting on the rocks, taking photos. There was a big rock in the middle of the river and everyone wanted to reach to the top of that rock. Some made their way to it by stepping on a series of small rocks. After about 10 minutes, the water level started rising. I was upstream and I noticed it first. I began screaming, trying to alert everyone as I rushed back,” a shocked Suharsa said.
